As a none American, I do believe that JFK was one of the best presidents they ever had, who struggled against members of his own government and against the workings of certain intelligence organisations in the US, both before he came to power and during it. In some respects I also feel he was always going to have issues, when you consider some of the links his family, particularly his father had to, shall we say, undesirable elements of US society.
Although I’ve read a lot about the Kennedy family and JFK in particular, a recent BBC televised serial in the UK really brought home these issues and portrayed JFK as a man continually struggling against officials he had no apparent control over and who had their own ideas about what should be done and invariably went ahead and did it. On many occasions it appeared that JFK agreed to a course of action only because his hands were tied by bureaucracy. The Bay of Pigs fiasco was very well documented and clearly portrayed the lack of planning and understanding the CIA played in it’s subsequent failure.
The latest release of parts of the post invasion report that Dr Jeffrey Lant, CEO Worldprofit, talks about in todays article, only confirm what the BBC portrayed in the TV serial, with surprising accuracy.
