When I woke up early this morning and sat at my desk ready to start work, I was shocked by the news that Steve Jobs, Co-Founder of Apple had died at the age of 56.

Whilst the news of his death has come as a great surprise to many, we should remember that he had been battling with pancreatic cancer for many years. Although he reported that the strain he had was rare and far less aggressive, it should also be noted that the prognosis for pancreatic cancer is usually very poor.

His passing leaves a gapping hole in the computer industry, his vision, innovation, and charismatic style, that created Apple and carried it forward in giant leaps and bounds, may never be seen again. Thank you Steve for passing on your vision to us all, may we all continue to be inspired by your memory.

The Mac faithful, of which I am unashamedly one, can only hope that in the hands of new CEO, Tim Cook, Apple will continue to innovate and inspire others to greater heights.

Today’s article by Dr Jeffrey Lant, CEO Worldprofit, relates the life of Holly Hickler, a writer and poet, who knew how to craft words and how to teach them effectively.

She understood children and expected high standards from them, but always treat them with kindness and empathy. She seemed to understand tee-agers very well and wrote a book about the impersonal attitude of teachers in meeting the needs of teen-agers, titled “Vivienne: The Life and Suicide of an Adolescent Girl”.

I’ve published a very interesting article today by Dr Jeffrey Lant, CEO Worldprofit.

Coco Chanel we’ve all heard of and we probably know her story already, although not necessarily in detail.  But Nancy Wake is a totally different character entirely and her story far more interesting. One was French and a German spy and the other was born in New Zealand and was a key figure in the French Resistance during World War II.

If you don’t already know which is which, then you need to read the article here: Articles / Interesting People / Two women, vastly different choices. Coco Chanel, Nancy Wake

For more information about either character, I suggest you go to Wikipedia (links above) and look at the entries for both. Both accounts make interesting reading.

Being a Brit, I have to admit to not knowing Lawrence Welk, I’ve never heard of him. Of course part of that might also be that I’m probably not quite old enough either. I was born in 1959, a few years after the TV show Dr Jeffrey Lant, CEO Worldprofit, talks about in this article. A TV show he remembers watching when he was 10 or so years old in 1957.

The shows I remember watching in my younger days were Laurel and Hardy, Morecambe and Wise and The Two Ronnies, in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

I probably shouldn’t say it but the music of Lawrence Welk reminds me more of Laurel and Hardy than anything else. The jaunty little numbers were just the sort of music that would play along with their crazy antics.

If you remember this era and want to read more about Lawrence Welk, check out Todays article at: Articles / Interesting People / Lawrence Welk and his Champagne Music and when you’ve read the article, why not leave a comment we can share with our other readers.

Today’s article celebrates the life of one of the greatest men ever to have lived, on the occassion of the dedication of a new memorial in Washington D.C. on Sunday 28 August 2011, which unfortunately, due to Hurricane Irene, has been postponed until September or October. The memorial will however be open, weather permitting, over the coming weekend.

Design of the Martin Luther King Memorial

The Memorial conveys three themes that were central throughout Dr. King’s life – democracy, justice, and hope. The centerpiece of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is the “Stone of Hope”, a 30-foot statue of Dr. King, gazing into the horizon and concentrating on the future and hope for humanity. The sculpture was carved from 159 granite blocks that were assembled to appear as one singular peace. There is also a 450-foot inscription wall, made from granite panels, that is inscribed with 14 excerpts of King’s sermons and public addresses to serve as living testaments of his vision of America. Landscape elements of the Memorial include American Elm trees, Yoshino Cherry Trees, Liriope plants, English yew, jasmine and sumac.

We should not forget the message Martin Luther King gave in the 1960’s and the sacrifice he made for Civil Rights in the US and the World. If we truly want to live in peace then regardless of colour or creed, we should all try to be a little more tolerant and thoughtful of our fellow man.
