5 Easy Ways To Get Your Creative Juices Going – Stimulate Your Senses!

By Graham Lee

Writing an article doesn’t just mean putting thoughts into words and then typing or writing them out. To get your message across you have to get the attention of the reader and have a firm grasp of their interests and pique their curiosity. And once you have captured the interest of your readers, you have to get them to keep on reading.

The main ingredient when creating an article is a large dose of creativity.

Whilst creativity may come naturally to many people, most people just can’t get started. Most just get writers block or something to that effect and just can’t seem to get their creative juices flowing.

The art of writing is the ability to place images into your readers mind. A clear and crisp depiction requires a certain flair that only creativity can provide. Similes and metaphors help a lot, but the way an article gets entwined word for word, sentence by sentence then paragraph by paragraph into a whole article develops the essence of the article and creates images in the mind of the reader.

So just what do you have to do when nothing comes to mind?

There is no surefire way to get the perfect idea but there are easy ways to get your creative juices flowing. No one can guarantee that you will have or be able to get into the perfect mindset but many methods may aid you in achieving that state of mind.

Here are five easy ways to help you.

1) Keep a diary or a journal with you always.

Ideas can be triggered by anything you may taste, hear, see, or smell. Your senses are your radar in finding great ideas. Whenever you come across anything which has stimulated any of your senses, write them down in a journal and keep it with you for future reference.

You should also write down anything that you have read, in a newspaper, a magazine, a book or signs you see. They may be someone else’s ideas, but they could be used to develop your own ideas. Remember that ideas and creativity can come from anywhere; it’s the development of the idea that makes it unique.

2) Relax and take time to sort things out.

A jumbled mind is too full of disconnected ideas and cannot create the space needed for new ideas. Everyone must have a clear mind if they wish to develop their creativity. Get rid of all the obstacles that can be a hindrance to your creativity. If you are bothered by something, you cannot force your mind to stay focused, so clear your mind of anything that is causing you concern.

Before you sit down to write try to relax so that you can and think about your experiences and interactions with others. Your experiences are what shape your mind and your opinions which could be reflected in your writings.

Try to discover yourself, find out what triggers your emotions. Discover what inspires you and what ticks you off. You can use these emotions to help you in expressing yourself and your ideas. Your emotions can help you to grow creatively.

Write down your thoughts and emotions in your journal, so that you can refer to them later. Describe how you were feeling when you had them and what you did to either develop or dismiss them.

3) Create a workplace that can inspire your creativeness.

Your workplace can be quite a hindrance if it doesn’t make you feel happy or relaxed. Creativity comes from being in a good state of mind and a messy, untidy workplace that causes distraction, won’t be conducive to firing up your creative flow.

Surround your working place with objects that makes you happy and relaxed. You may put up pictures, or scents, objects that inspire, or anything that can get your creativeness flowing. A clean and well organized workplace also gets rid of distractions and unwanted hindrances. With a good workplace, you can work in peace and never notice the time pass by.

4) Set the right mood.

Setting the mood requires you to just go with the moment or to induce your self to feeling what makes your mind work best. Finding out what makes you tick could help you find ways to get your creative juices flowing. Set the pace and tempo for your mood and everything else will follow.

There are many ways to set the right mood.

  • Some writers have been known to use alcohol, a little sip of wine to stir up the imagination. Not too much; you need to be able to type or write coherently!
  • Some writers like to have music playing. Make sure it is music that does not have you jumping around the room; you’re here to write not dance!
  • Some writers let the lighting of the environment create the mood. Not too dark; you don’t want to drop off to sleep and you need to be able to see!

5) Go on a getaway and just do something crazy.

This is possibly the most radical, but can be useful if you’ve been going for a little while without being able to focus or get your creativity kick started.

Letting yourself go and having fun produces adrenaline that can make your imagination go wild. Take yourself off on an adventure and remember to take your journal so you can write everything down.

If you can’t take a few days away, maybe just go for a brisk or relaxing walk, sometimes just getting some fresh air or a change of scenery is enough to get you started. Staring at the same four walls of your office or writing place, can drain your creativity and make you lethargic and unproductive.

Doing whatever you have to do that is different from your daily routine can break you out of the rut that is your schedule. In no time at all, your creativeness will make use of that experience and get your imagination and creativity into overdrive.

Just remember to take your journal with you everywhere and write down everything you read, taste, hear, see or smell, … and enjoy yourself.
