How To Grab Your Readers Attention With Your Subject.

By Graham Lee

The race for supremacy for internet based businesses has been really heating up recently and many products and websites have been appearing which proclaim that they can help others to get ahead using some secret code or back-door, that’s never been seen before. Many don’t work as well as they are supposed to and some just don’t work at all, whilst others work very well for a short time until the back-door they exploit is closed. This usually happens when more people buy the software or system and start using the secret code, it not a secret anymore!

But there are also ways in which you can be successful online without having to resort to any of these new-fangled secret codes. These methods have been around a long time and whilst they may seem old fashioned and out-dated, they still work very effectively, if you do it right.

The first step is to build an opt-in list of people who are interested in what you have to offer. Having generated the required web traffic and visitors, you should be in a good position to build an opt-in list and make it grow from there.

The Subject Line

A good ‘Subject’ line can be used to generate traffic and visitors to your website or landing page initially, and then again later to build and retain your opt-in list.

The subject line is the first thing surfers will see in your safelist message, your blog page or your website. If they like what they see in the subject, they are more likely to want to read more or to click through to your website, which of course, if you are a savvy online marketer, will contain your opt-in form to your email list or newsletter.

Once you have them on your email list, it doesn’t stop there.

When people sign up to your newsletter or email list, they know that they will be receiving updates and news from your site and the industry your represent via an e-mail. But that doesn’t mean that all of those who subscribe will actually read them at all.

If your list has been built with the enticement of free software or for a promotional discount for example, some subscribers will only be interested in the ‘freebie’ and are not really interested in receiving e-mails. They just treat your emails as a waste of cyberspace and delete or trash them without so much as opening the e-mail and scanning them.

Even if you have people on your email list because you offered useful information, due to the sheer amount of email people receive today, they may still not read your email.

But you can change all that.

Whilst sending an email message is relatively easy after producing your message or newsletter, getting people to open them is not so easy. You don’t want to waste all the time and effort used in writing your newsletters, only to have it end up in the trash. You want people to read them and have their interests piqued. You want them interested enough to go to your website and look around and most especially purchase your products or services.

This is where again a good subject line plays its part.

As with the subject line of your initial message or blog posting, you can tempt or persuade your subscriber to click your sales link in your email or newsletter by providing a well thought out and well written subject. The subject of an email is what is often referred to when a person or a recipient decides whether he or she wants to open or read an e-mail.

The subject then is easily one of the most important aspects of your  promotional material.

Writing a Good Subject.

We’ve already stated that your subject must be well thought out and well written.

  • Your subject must be short and concise.

It should provide a summary for the content of the e-mail so that the recipient will have basic knowledge of the content. This is really vital in grabbing the attention of your readers and subscribers. You want your subject to instantly grab the attention of your subscriber and get them to be intrigued enough to open up your mail.

Remember, it is not necessarily true that a subscriber always opens up subscribed emails.

  • A good subject must always be tickling the curiosity of your recipient.
  • It must literally force the recipient to open the mail.
  • A certain emotion must be ignited to get them to open the mail.
  • It is essential to use specific words to get the reaction you need.

Keep in mind that the recipient or subscribers spends only a few seconds looking over each subject of the e-mails he receives. You must grab your reader’s attention right away.

Providing Information, Asking Questions, Commanding Your Reader and Announcements

There are many forms you can use for your subject.

1. You can provide a subject that says your e-mail contains content that teaches them some essential tips and methods on certain topics.

An example of this is using keywords and keyword phrases such as, “How to”, “Learn How to”, “tips”, “Guides to”, “Methods to” and others like that.

Everybody wants to know how to do something and if you are providing instructions on how to do what they are specifically stuck on, they will want to read your email.

2. You can also put your subject in a question form. These may include questions like, “Are you sick and tired of your job?” Or “Is your boss always on your case?”

This form of subject is very effective because it reaches out to your recipients emotions. When they read the question in your subject, their mind starts answering the question and they want to find out what your answer will be.

3. You can also use a subject that commands your reader.

Statements such as “Act now and get this once in a lifetime opportunity”, or “Double, triple and even quadruple what you are earning in one year”.

This type of subject deals with the benefits your company provides with your product and services. Your readers will be interested to know how they can achieve what your subject line is telling them they can do by ‘acting now’

4. You could also use breaking news as your subject to intrigue your subscriber.

For example, if you deal with car engine parts you can write in your subject, “Announcing the new engine that uses no gasoline, It runs on water”. This creates curiosity with the reader and will lead them to open the email and read on.

This can be especially effective if you can include current technology or environmental benefits.

Stay on Topic

Regardless of which method you use, there is one thing you must remember.

You must try to stay on the topic that pertains to your website or product. There is no point for example using a subject like; “How to Make Money Online”, if you are a Car salesman. Your website is most likely going to be a Car showroom.

You need to build Trust in your subscribers, so you need to be knowledgeable about your company and your product, and you must be honest about what you are actually providing to your subscribers. So make sure that your subject is related to the content in the email, so that you’ll know that your subscribers have signed up because they are interested in that topic.

If your subject line is well written and well thought out, your readers will want to find out more and read your email, and then if you really provide the information the subject line implies it will provide, your readers will trust you and watch out for your next email…

…which of course, will have another compelling subject line, enticing them to read again.
