When talking about Affiliate marketing, we generally think about online marketers who generate sales from promoting and selling other peoples products. Almost all of the products, ebooks and software systems currently on the market, are aimed at people who are or want to become affiliate marketers, promoting other peoples products. This means they don’t need to produce their own products or have a means of taking payments, other than a way to receive their affiliate commissions.
But in actual fact there are two types of affiliate marketer and which one you are, dictates what tasks you will usually perform each day.
The first type we’ll call ‘The Affiliate’ – this is the type of marketer we’ve already described. They promote other peoples products and do not normally own or produce their own. They probably do have their own website on which they promote the specific products they are affiliates for.
The second type we’ll call ‘The Marketer’ – this type of marketer produces and then sells their own products through a team of affiliates. If they want to attract many affiliates and ultimately more sales, they will need to also produce sales materials in the form of websites, emails, salesletters and banners. Although there are affiliate networks on which they can submit their products, who will handle the affiliate payments, they may also decide to operate some form of affiliate network themselves, which will require a payment system and management thereof.
In most cases, ‘The Marketer’ is also ‘The Affiliate’ for other marketers products because they have their own list of customers, to which they can promote any product they wish and obviously earn a commission or sale.
So affiliate marketing is a very profitable method of working online but does require a certain amount of dedication and hard work to ensure that your profits are high and remain so.
For ‘The Affiliate’, to be an affiliate marketer means more than just promoting a few affiliate links and waiting for the checks to roll in. For ‘The Marketer’, there is a great deal more involved.
The Affiliate Marketer
So what exactly does it mean to be a successful affiliate marketer?
To answer that question it would probably be a good idea to look at a typical day for the affiliate marketer. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which tasks relate to each type of affiliate marketer. If you are already an affiliate marketer, your day may not be exactly the same but in general the tasks included here are probably very close to what you do yourself every day.
To start with, regardless of whether the affiliate is in ‘The Affiliate’ or ‘The Marketer’ category, affiliate marketing usually means that they work from home, so the day does not start with the long, boring commute, on a stuffy, overcrowded train, to sit in front of a computer for 8 hours doing boring work, then the same in reverse to get home.
After getting up and having breakfast, followed by a short walk to the home office, the computer is turned on to check the overnight email. At the same time, new affiliate sales are also noted.
Time also, to track down the sales coming from affiliates, fairly and accurately. If telephone orders are setup, the answering machine is checked for more orders or enquiries. These are checked to see if they are new clients, who are just checking the products out, remembering to note down the contact information which might be a viable source of information or income in the future.
The affiliate marketer also remembers that there are questions to answer from the visitors to the websites. This has to be done quickly. Nothing can turn off a customer more than an unanswered email.
To prove that the affiliate is working effectively and efficiently, enquiries would have to be paid more attention. Nobody wants to be ignored and customers are not always the most patient of all people. Quick answers are given which appear professional yet friendly too.
Time now to check out new developments in the affiliate networks. As far as the marketer is concerned there might be new things to update and statistics to keep track of.
The site design is checked and possibly has to be revised. The marketer knows that a well-designed site can increase sign ups from visitors. It can also help in the affiliate’s conversion rates. By looking at the results since the site was last changed or uploaded, changes can be actioned to try to improve sales.
That done, it is time to submit the affiliate program to all the directories that list affiliate programs to attract more people to join as affiliates. A sure way of promoting the affiliate program and getting more affiliates to promote the product.
Next there are resources to sort out. New Ads to write, banners to develop, button ads and sample recommendations to give out because the marketer knows that this is one way of ensuring more sales. Best way to stay visible and accessible too.
In the process of doing all the necessary tasks, the marketer has logged into a few chat rooms where he or she can interact with other affiliates and those under that same program. This is where they can discuss ways on how to best promote their products, all with the aim of increasing sales.
There are always new methods and marketing tools to be learned and it is a continuous process. Sharing tips and advice is a good way of showing support. There may be others out there wanting to join and may be enticed by the discussion that is going on. There is no harm in assuming what opportunities lie ahead.
Time to update newsletters and ezines, by checking for any new information and new things happening in the market in other affiliate newsletters and ezines. New and useful information will need to be written up into the marketer’s publication to be distributed to the old and new customers and affiliates.
These same publications are also an important tool in keeping up to date with the newly introduced products. The marketer has to research these new products or programs that have just been released. Maybe time to put them up for sale or promotion , in case other customers want to know about them. Getting in early is always a good idea, as sales are always higher just after launch.
It is also a good time to show some appreciation to those who have helped the marketer in the promotions and sales increase. There’s nothing like mentioning people, their sites and the process they have done that made everything worked. Sharing this information with other affiliates to help them increase sales as well is a good idea.
Of course, all this will be published in the marketers own newsletter. Along with the more important information that have been written already today.
The marketer still has time to write out recommendations to those who want credible sources for the products being promoted. There is also time to post some comments on how to be a successful affiliate marketer on those sites where there are lots of wannabe affiliates looking for a good program to promote.
This completes two objectives at the same time. The marketer gets to promote the product as well as the program they are in. Who knows, someone may be inclined to join.
How time flies. Missed lunch… again, but is quite contented with the tasks done. Managed to get a lot done today. Just enough time to remember to list all the things that should have been done today but didn’t quite get round to doing, also adding to the list new ideas to investigate tomorrow or later this week at least.
At last…Bed time….
Ok, so the marketer may not get all that done in a day. But even so, this gives you an idea of how an affiliate marketer, a dedicated and committed one that is, spends their marketing day. The marketer has to be constant and consistent in doing as much as possible to move forward. One stop means a step backwards in the affiliate marketing world, moving forwards is the only way to more profits.
