5 Common Affiliate Mistakes! – Make Sure You Don’t Make Them!

By Graham Lee

Stories concerning affiliate marketing are both appealing and attractive.

They promise easy wealth, proclaiming that you don’t need your own product, don’t need your own website, don’t need to talk to any customers, don’t need to sell anything, and so on.

But people who do not know anything about affiliate marketing are prone to believe that it is something capable of giving them a great fortune overnight.

Stories concerning affiliates who earn tremendous amounts of money fill their heads, and while these stories are as true as they can be, there are those who believe that they are going to have the same fortune once they indulge in this particular business.

Unfortunately many of these tales, whilst true in principle, are just not true in reality for many people.

Affiliate Truths

It is true enough that affiliate marketing is financially rewarding.

People who have gone through all the various steps to be able to succeed in this business are reaping the rewards of everything they have sown.  Many of them enjoy the kind of lifestyle that was not possible for them to have had under ordinary circumstances, and that many people dream of.

Affiliate Hype

Having gone through the A-Z of affiliate marketing, however, these people are the ones who know that while such business is lucrative, there is absolutely no easy money in it.

Ignorance of this fact is one of the main reasons why there are people who fail miserably in the internet business.

There are those who believe in all the stories and hype concerning the easy money involved in systems such as affiliate marketing.  They do not know that there are those who have wasted time, effort and too many resources in trying to pursue the life of ease that they believe this business will give them.  And so they go into affiliate marketing armed with nothing but stories  and fantastical notions of wealth swimming in their consciousness, never realizing that they are bound to make mistakes that would prove to be their downfall.

When this happens, many fall by the wayside, give up on affiliate marketing and move on to something else, just as hyped up but also just as difficult to succeed.

What may be the reason why in businesses such as affiliate marketing, many are called but few are chosen?

The most likely answer lies on the fact that many people who look at affiliate marketing, or get drawn into it by all the stories and hype, make mistakes that result from their ignorance of facts concerning how the entire business runs.

Affiliate marketing is not as simple as an affiliate promoting a merchant’s products through his website and getting paid for it.  It is also about knowing the market and the customers in that market.

By discovering what the most common mistakes affiliates can make are, we can perhaps dispel the misinformation surrounding affiliate marketing by correcting some wrong notions about it.  We might also be able to help those concerned understand that like any other business, there is a right way and a wrong way of going about each step,  if they want to make sure each of their steps count.

Five Common Mistakes

Mistake 1. Many people looking at affiliate marketing lack the knowledge they need concerning principles involved in their business.  This refers to the affiliate’s knowledge of search engines in particular.

Affiliate marketing involves advertising, and advertising through the internet could not have been possible without the existence of search engines.  What every affiliate has to do is to make these search engines his best friend through studying search engine optimization closely.  This way, he is able to know what to do in connection with building a better website to ultimately use for his business.

Mistake 2. People are often sold affiliate marketing systems, designed to help them start in affiliate marketing, which say that you do not need to have your own website. They are told that all they need to do is to get their affiliate link and promote it.  The affiliate link will take any potential customers to the product vendors website, where the sale will happen.  No website, No selling, No contacting customers etc.

Whilst this is true in essence, if you want to do well in affiliate marketing you do need your own websites, one for each affiliate product or group of related products you are going to promote.

Mistake 3. Once new affiliates get past the idea of needing a website, they then stuff their websites with banners that do nothing to provide potential customers with enough information about the product they are promoting.

The best way to combat this mistake is to provide good content hand-in-hand with such banners.  It is important for customers to know and understand the features of a product, and good content will be able to help them realize this goal. An excellent method to use in providing this content is to write a review of the product. Providing evidence of your own success with the product will warm customers to buying through your link.

Mistake 4. Many new affiliates make the mistake of promoting only one product.  Consequently, customers are not given enough options to choose from.  Obviously products must be related to the others in the group, possibly at different price points.

You want your customers to stay on your website for as long as possible, so by having more options for customers ponder over, you will help generate more sales.  It is always better to give them a few better alternatives than to give them only one. If McDonalds only sold the BigMac, they would very quickly go out of business!

Mistake 5. Conversely many new affiliates make the mistake of promoting too many products.  As a result, customers are confused and end up not making a choice.

There may be 10 products in a particular niche, all at different prices and feature or functionality level. It is much better to give potential customers only the best choices of say the top 3 or 4.  This is because it is ultimately up to them to judge which one is the best for them to purchase. If they see that you are not just promoting products but have provided reviews of the top 3, they are more likely to purchase the one that suits them.

Due diligence

All in all, affiliates that are doomed to fail in this business are those who do not put enough time and effort into understanding everything involved in the industry that they about to enter.

Proper research into the niche they are going to enter, with regards to, for example, what products are available, how many people search for the products, how much are they willing to pay for the product etc., is the only way to ensure that they enter affiliate marketing with the knowledge they require to succeed.

Knowing their path step by careful step will prove to be beneficial and profitable to them, as there is no other way to succeed than to go through any path slowly but surely.
