In my previous post I mentioned that in the three years I’ve been working online, I’d read hundreds of eBooks and bought and setup a number of websites. This is an area where I’ve probably fallen into the usual traps, some of which I’ve yet to climb out of, by jumping in with both feet, thinking that all I needed to do was setup some websites and wait for the money to come rolling in. This is not the case and now of course, I’m overwhelmed with information overload and lack of focus, or more specifically the inability to focus.
Regarding information overload, I currently get around 150 emails per day from lists I’ve signed up to, many of which I just don’t have time to read. I usually skim through them quickly every morning and if something catches my eye, I’ll read more. I love downloading ‘Freebies’ and always download anything that is free. This means my hard drive is full of ebooks and software I’ll probably never read or use. When I purchase something I nearly always purchase the resale rights as well but as yet I’ve only used the odd one or two. I always read the stuff I’ve paid for though, and I’ve got nearly three boxes full of eBooks I’ve printed and I’ve read nearly all of them.
But now that I’m not earning a full-time living from a regular 9-5 job, I’ve had to restrict myself to only buying the most essential items until I at least start making a decent living online. Hopefully soon! I’ve also had to cancel a number of memberships until I can afford them, so if any of you guys are reading this and I’ve cancelled my membership, I’m sorry, it’s nothing personal.
I’m now starting to get more focused in what I’m doing and have started to sift through all the ‘crap’ on my hard drive. I started using Alex Goodall’s IM Index Mind Map to help me to do that. This is an excellent tool to get you organised. He has also just release another tool, The Laser Focus Shield which is brilliant at getting you focused on what you need to do. Both of these products are well worth the cost if you want to get focused and organised in your online marketing efforts.
My biggest problem now is that I have such a lot of stuff to sort out it will take me months to go through it all. So my advice to anyone starting out is this:
‘Get Organised and Focused’
as soon as possible to prevent information overload.
Until the next time
